The 2013 season was Glamorgan County Cricket Club's 126th year in existence and their 93rd as a first-class cricket county. They played most of their home matches at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, but also used outgrounds in Swansea (St Helen's) and Rhos-on-Sea (Penrhyn Avenue). They finished eighth in Division Two of the County Championship, but came second in Group C of the ECB40, qualifying for the knockout stage as the best runner-up; they went on to beat Hampshire at the Rose Bowl in the semi-finals, but lost to Nottinghamshire by 87 runs in the final at Lord's. In the Twenty20 Cup, they finished third in the Mid/Wales/West Group, just missing out on the quarter-finals. In the limited-overs formats, the team reverted from their "Welsh Dragons" branding to simply being known as Glamorgan.
The team was coached by Matthew Mott for a third year, and captained by wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Wallace in the County Championship, and by Australian batsman Marcus North in the ECB40 and the Twenty20 Cup. North also served as Glamorgan's overseas player for a second year in a row. The club had announced the signing of Australian bowler Dirk Nannes as their second overseas player for the Twenty20 Cup in March 2013, before Nannes suffered a stress fracture in his back while playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. They signed New Zealand spin bowler Nathan McCullum as Nannes' replacement in June, following in the footsteps of his younger brother Brendon, who had played for Glamorgan in 2006.
After playing in one County Championship match in 2012, seam bowler Simon Jones renegotiated his contract to add a commitment to play six more first-class matches in 2013; however, he did not play in a single County Championship match in 2013. Glamorgan further added to their bowling attack with the signing of Australian seamer Michael Hogan; he was originally supposed to join in July 2012, but ultimately stayed in Australia to finish his contract with Western Australia. Other signings included youth all-rounder Ruaidhri Smith on a development contract, and Zimbabwean batter Murray Goodwin on an initial one-year deal.
This was Glamorgan's first season without veteran spinner Robert Croft since 1988, having retired at the end of his 23rd season with the Welsh county in September 2012. Seam bowler James Harris also left the club to join Division One side Middlesex at the end of 2012 in a bid to improve his chances of an England call-up, turning down a move to Nottinghamshire and a "substantial contract" with Glamorgan to do so. South African batter Martin van Jaarsveld, and academy products Chris Ashling, Aneurin Norman and Mike O'Shea also left the club at the end of their contracts prior to the start of the 2013 season.
