Clubul Sportiv Pandurii Lignitul Târgu Jiu (), commonly known as Pandurii Târgu Jiu or simply Pandurii, was a Romanian football club based in Târgu Jiu, Gorj County, which last competed in the Liga IV.
Founded in 1962 following the merger of Flacăra-Unirea Târgu Jiu and CIL Târgu Jiu, the team's best performances were finishing as Liga I runners-up in the 2012–13 season and playing a League Cup final in 2015. Gorjenii qualified for the first time for a European competition in the 2013–14 campaign, when they reached the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.
The colours of Pandurii Târgu Jiu were white and blue, and they played their home games at the Tudor Vladimirescu Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 12,518.
History
Founding and lower divisions (1962–2005) Pandurii Târgu Jiu was founded in August 1962 following the merger of two local rivals, Flacăra-Unirea Târgu Jiu and CIL Târgu Jiu. The new club entered the fourth tier of Romanian football with the immediate objective of reaching the national divisions.
Promotion was achieved at the end of the club's first season, with Pandurii entering Divizia C in the summer of 1963. Its first match in the third tier was played on 1 September 1963 against Siderurgistul Hunedoara and ended in a 6–0 victory, with goals scored by Chițu (12'), Nelu Băloi (35'), Melinte (53', 80') and Vasilescu (83', 85').
During its first years in Divizia C, Pandurii regularly finished in the upper half of the standings and gradually developed ambitions of reaching Divizia B. The breakthrough came in the 1976–77 season. Coached by former Romanian international Titus Ozon and relying on a relatively young squad, Pandurii dominated its series and earned promotion to the second division for the first time.
The club's first stay in Divizia B lasted only one season, as it was immediately relegated back to the third tier. Pandurii nevertheless became a regular presence in the second division during the following years, competing there between 1979 and 1983 and again between 1986 and 1991.
After spending most of the 1990s in Divizia C, Pandurii returned to the second tier in 2000. The club gradually established itself as a promotion contender and finished second in its series in the 2003–04 season, behind Sportul Studențesc.
The following campaign finally brought the club its historic breakthrough. Coached by Emil Săndoi, Pandurii assembled a squad combining younger players such as Tiberiu Lung and Sorin Vintilescu with experienced footballers including Florin Popete, Robert Vancea and Romulus Buia. The team won its Divizia B series and earned promotion to Divizia A for the first time in club history.
First years in the top flight (2005–2011) Pandurii made its top-flight debut in the 2005–06 season. The transition proved difficult and the club finished 15th, which would normally have resulted in relegation. However, Sportul Studențesc was denied a licence for the following season because of financial problems, allowing Pandurii to retain its place in the first division.
The club strengthened its squad during the summer, bringing in players such as Alexandru Păcurar, Ciprian Vasilache and Liviu Mihai. The improvements were reflected in the results, as Pandurii finished 11th in the 2006–07 season and subsequently established itself as a regular mid-table Liga I side.
Pandurii again appeared destined for relegation at the end of the 2009–10 season, after finishing below the survival line. The club nevertheless remained in the top flight following the withdrawal of Internațional Curtea de Argeș, which had finished 10th but was dissolved by its owner.
Several former Internațional players subsequently joined Pandurii, including Vlad Chiricheș, Mihai Pintilii and Dan Nistor. Strengthened by these additions, the Gorj side finished 13th in the 2010–11 season.

The 2011–12 season marked another step forward for the club. Pandurii finished 7th, at that point the highest league position in its history, and remained in contention for a place in European competition for part of the campaign.
The breakthrough came in the following season. Under coach Cristian Pustai, Pandurii produced the best league campaign in its history and finished as Liga I runners-up behind Steaua București. The result qualified the club for the 2013–14 UEFA Europa League, marking its first appearance in European competition.
Pandurii entered the Europa League in the second qualifying round and eliminated Estonian side Levadia Tallinn. It then defeated Hapoel Tel Aviv in the third qualifying round before producing one of the greatest results in the club's history against Portuguese side Braga in the play-off round.
After losing the first leg 0–1 at home, Pandurii won 2–0 after extra time in Portugal and qualified for the group stage. The club was drawn in Group E alongside Fiorentina, FC Dnipro and Paços de Ferreira.
Pandurii finished last in its group, but recorded several competitive performances and earned two draws, including a 1–1 result away against Paços de Ferreira. The European campaign represented the highest-profile international achievement in the history of the club.
Peak years and second European qualification (2013–2016) Pandurii remained one of the stronger Romanian clubs during the following seasons. On 10 March 2015, with Edward Iordănescu as head coach, the team defeated Dinamo București in the semi-finals of the newly established Cupa Ligii and reached the first major domestic cup final in club history.
Earlier in the competition, Pandurii had also eliminated Petrolul Ploiești at the Ilie Oană Stadium. In the final, played at the Arena Națională, Pandurii lost to Steaua București.
The 2015–16 season became another of the most successful campaigns in the club's history. With Iordănescu continuing as head coach, Narcis Răducan serving as president and a squad featuring players such as Cristian Săpunaru, Dan Nistor, Ioan Hora and Mihai Răduț, Pandurii qualified for the inaugural championship play-off under the new Liga I format.
The club remained among the leading teams throughout the season and eventually finished 3rd, behind Astra Giurgiu and Steaua București. The result represented Pandurii's second-highest league finish and qualified the club for the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League.
In European competition, Pandurii entered the third qualifying round, where it faced Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Romanian club lost both matches and was eliminated 2–5 on aggregate.
Financial crisis and relegation (2016–2017) Despite entering the 2016–17 season after another European qualification, Pandurii's financial situation deteriorated rapidly. The club's principal financial supporters encountered difficulties and reduced or stopped their contributions, leaving the team with growing salary arrears and other debts.
The problems resulted in the departure of many senior players during the season. Although footballers such as Lucian Sânmărtean and George Țucudean had joined the club during the campaign, much of the experienced squad eventually left and Pandurii increasingly relied on players promoted from its reserve and youth teams.
The club also entered insolvency proceedings during the 2016–17 season. Sporting results declined sharply and, after twelve consecutive seasons in the Romanian top flight, Pandurii was relegated to Liga II at the end of the campaign. Despite its financial problems and weakened squad, the team remained in contention for survival until the final round.
Liga II and continuing financial problems (2017–2021) For the 2017–18 season, Pandurii rebuilt its squad largely around young players promoted from the reserve and youth teams. Because the reconstruction of the Tudor Vladimirescu Stadium in Târgu Jiu had not yet been completed, the club temporarily played its home matches in Motru.
The financial problems that had contributed to the club's relegation from Liga I continued throughout its time in the second tier. Pandurii remained under insolvency proceedings and repeatedly faced difficulties related to unpaid debts, player contracts and the financial obligations inherited from its final top-flight seasons.
Despite these problems, the club managed to retain its Liga II status for several seasons, increasingly relying on young and inexpensive players.
Ahead of the 2020–21 season, Pandurii initially failed to obtain the financial certification required for participation because of its debts. The decision resulted in considerable uncertainty over the club's future, although it ultimately continued in Liga II.
The sporting decline eventually became irreversible. At the end of the 2020–21 season, Pandurii was relegated to Liga III, ending a run of twenty-one consecutive seasons spent in Romania's top two divisions.
Final season in the national leagues (2021–2022) Pandurii entered the 2021–22 Liga III season with ambitions of immediately returning to Liga II. Club officials announced a rebuilding programme during the summer of 2021 and attempted to assemble a competitive squad despite the continuing insolvency proceedings.
Financial and legal problems nevertheless continued to dominate the club's final years. Pandurii had been undergoing reorganisation under insolvency proceedings since 2017 and remained threatened by bankruptcy. By January 2022, several former players and employees had agreed to reduce portions of the money owed to them in an effort to assist the club, while Pandurii was also pursuing unpaid amounts that it claimed were owed by its former public-sector associates.
Pandurii completed the 2021–22 Liga III campaign, but its situation deteriorated further during the summer. The club was subject to a transfer ban and was left with only a very small number of senior players available for the following season.
In August 2022, Pandurii announced that it would not enter the 2022–23 Liga III season. The withdrawal brought an end to thirty consecutive years of participation in Romania's national leagues. Club officials stated that the transfer embargo made it impossible to assemble a competitive squad, with only two senior players available at the time.
The club instead entered the Gorj County fourth division, while initially maintaining that it intended to continue operating and rebuild from the county level. Pandurii began the Liga IV campaign strongly and won each of its opening five matches.
Bankruptcy and dissolution (2022) The attempt to rebuild in Liga IV proved short-lived. During the autumn of 2022, several creditors, including former players, coaches and officials, requested that the insolvency proceedings be converted into bankruptcy. Among those seeking payment were former coach Edward Iordănescu, former president Narcis Răducan and players including Dan Nistor, Ovidiu Herea, Florin Acsinte and Jordy Buijs.
On 18 October 2022, the Gorj Tribunal ordered Asociația Clubul Sportiv Pandurii-Lignitul Târgu Jiu to enter bankruptcy proceedings. The court appointed Consulting Company IPURL as provisional liquidator, removed the club's right of administration and expressly ordered the dissolution of the association.
The club announced that it intended to appeal the decision, but the bankruptcy order had immediate sporting consequences. On 21 October, Pandurii informed the Gorj County Football Association that it could no longer organise its scheduled Liga IV match against Minerul Mătăsari and would withdraw from the county championship. The club also ceased entering its youth teams in competition because it could no longer finance the organisation of matches.
